We were fortunate to be in that latter segment. Around 60 per cent are getting by, or are as they were before, and the remaining 20 per cent had a product or a service that people wanted or needed during the pandemic. How did COVID-19 impact the industry-globally and in Canada-and how did Rakuten Kobo respond?Īcross all industries, about 20 per cent of businesses have been hit very hard and are really suffering. It’s about being a lens or a conduit-the bottle in which you catch lightning. It’s your job to collect and focus all that expertise, effort and ambition to make something new and amazing. Yes, you study, train and work your way up to the podium, but then you find yourself in front of a group of people, each of whom have dedicated their lives to getting to that chair, who are striving to be the best that they can be. Interestingly, the theme I kept coming back to is one that I took from music school: The awesome responsibility that conductors take on when they lead an orchestra. Above all, I’m running a “born hybrid” 500-person company that has built a great culture with remote staff all over the world with offices in Toronto, Dublin, Darmstadt and Taipei. There were lots of considerations around international and regulatory nuance, supply chains and manufacturing, culture, content creation, publishers and authors, moderation versus curation and censorship versus free speech. It sits at the intersection of so many of the biggest themes in technology and society right now: E-commerce bricks-and-mortar retail mobile digital assets hardware and D2C and B2B. Rakuten Kobo is a perfect company for the intellectually restless. Were there any values that acted as a lodestar for you as a leader? What lessons did you take away during this period? You became CEO in 2016 as Rakuten Kobo was undergoing an intense period of acquisition, restructuring and change. I jumped on board and the rest is history. Just like when we were starting bookshelf.ca, there was that sense of an industry on the verge of remaking itself, where there was a narrow window of opportunity for a new entrant to break out and go global. I got a call from my former boss, Heather Reisman, and her then-CTO Mike Serbinis, and visited the basement of Indigo, where the skunkworks that would become Kobo was first taking shape. After six years as CEO, I was ready for something new right as eBooks were starting to gain traction. That was later acquired to become Indigo.ca, and I went on to become Indigo’s first VP of online operations.įrom there, more start-ups, some consulting, and then founding BookNet Canada, the not-for-profit technology change agent for the Canadian book industry. We started Canada’s first online bookstore, bookshelf.ca. where I worked while finishing a degree in classical music composition. After discovering that composing in Canada is a beautiful way to starve slowly, I got together with some like-minded, very gifted people including The Bookshelf’s co-owner. I had the privilege of coming into books through a legendary independent bookstore, The Bookshelf, in Guelph, Ont. How did you get your start in digital publishing and bookselling, and what drew you to a company like Rakuten Kobo? You’ve been a key member of Rakuten Kobo’s leadership since its inception in 2009. Tamblyn spoke with CB about the future of books, how the pandemic impacted the digital publishing industry, and how Rakuten Kobo is adapting for the future. Our leader-in-residence this month is Michael Tamblyn, president and chief executive officer at Rakuten Kobo. As part of the program, readers will have the chance to connect with these execs for mentorship and professional development through exclusive content, virtual fireside chats and more. One of the ways we are doing this is through the Canadian Business Leadership Circle, CB’s leader-in-residence program where each month we engage a different C-suite-level executive making an impact in their field. Today’s CB is all about profiling and connecting innovative leaders who are changing Canada for the better.ĬB gives these leaders-and those who want to learn from them-the resources, networking opportunities, and inspiration to innovate, connect and continue to challenge the status quo. These characteristics are useful for analog applications such as phase and frequency switching with bias selectivity. (19−22) While ambipolar behavior of WSe 2 provides both electron and hole branches in transistor transfer characteristics, (21) the opposite of ambipolar transport is also possible in principle where electron and hole transport can be blocked to achieve anti-ambipolar behavior. Tungsten diselenide (WSe 2), a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), is particularly interesting due to its near-silicon bandgap in bulk, ambipolar transport with high hole and electron mobilities, high optical absorption, spin-polarized valleys, and ease of electrostatic control for device operation. One such promising property of certain semiconducting 2DLMs is their ambipolar behavior that allows controllable electron as well as hole transport in the same transistor. Generic device architecture and operation makes this work adaptable to any ambipolar material amenable to electrostatic control. A dual-metal contact transistor with improved linearity for harmonic and excess power suppression demonstrates further performance enhancement. Evaluation of all possible schemes for their power consumption, error probability, and implementation complexity highlights the importance of switching between ambipolar and anti-ambipolar modes of transport for best transmission performance. The output waveforms were used to generate phase-, frequency-, and amplitude-modulated analog schemes for 2- and 3-bit data transmission. This enables the realization of in-phase, out-of-phase, and double-frequency sinusoidal output signals under dark and illumination conditions. This work demonstrates electrostatically reconfigurable and tunable ambipolar and anti-ambipolar transport in the same field-effect transistor using a photoactive ambipolar WSe 2 channel with gate-controlled channel and Schottky barriers. However, the availability of only one transport mode severely limits the application scope and range. Various analog applications, such as phase switching, have been demonstrated using either ambipolar or anti-ambipolar transport in two-dimensional materials. Or won’t need more than two attempts to complete successfully. in the same way as you would use a teaching poster, having things written on them so that parents can see the language point (even if the students can’t read yet) and making them seasonal so that they can be displayed for a very good reason and then taken down at the end of that period without any protest. Criteria for good worksheets to display include making them things you can use in future lessons, e.g. The universal desire of parents to display their kids’ work is something that can be educationally beneficial in all kinds of ways too. You might also want to take account of the time of day, challenge level of other things they are going to do in the same day etc when you judge this. As well as keeping a close eye on what they can do and pushing them further in very small increments, it is also worth taking a step back in challenge level from time to time to give them a rest and a boost in confidence. Very young children love being mentally and physically challenged, but are also prone to feelings of frustration. This means things like moving towards using a pencil rather than a crayon, using scissors, pressure to keep inside the lines of increasingly small and awkwardly shaped objects when colouring, and making shapes that will lead onto writing, such as loops.įor example, adding a more and more complicated puzzle element for 4 to 6 year olds, starting with things like colouring something in to reveal what it is or join the dots and moving up to maths puzzles etc. …but helping push them to the next level. Here are some tips that should help you find or create the perfect worksheet for your classes: Choosing a good worksheet is even more difficult for pre-school age students than for other children and adults, as they are not only more likely to find a bad worksheet boring but might also be totally unable to write, draw or read what you what them to. It's a simple trick, the Cinebench render resolution has been increased by fourfold, giving the benchmark a much longer and larger workload, this results into a more reliable score with the 64-threaded beasts we have available these days. With that idea in mind Guru3D's HWGeek started modding Cinebench. For over a decade, Cinebench has been the 'go-to' tool to evaluate hardware performance. That's not entirely realistic as processors clock down after a number of seconds of full stress. Cinebench R20 leverages the same powerful 3D engine in Cinema 4D Release 20 (Cinema 4D R20) to accurately evaluate CPU rendering performance capabilities across various systems and platforms. That means that any Turbo can run 100% all the time as the benchmark finishes (too) fast. The 16-core and even 32-core processors these days can finish up the benchmark in merely seconds. However, Maxon never updated it to cope with many-core processors. So you need to start your cover letter in a way that attracts and holds the reader’s interest. Here’s the brutal truth: these few sentences at the beginning of your cover letter will determine whether the hiring manager will read on. And if you’re not living in Victorian England, don’t start a cover letter with Dear Sir or Madam either. Avoid starting your cover letter with To Whom It May Concern like the plague. If you can’t find the name by any means possible, opt for Dear Hiring Manager. You should find people there responsible for uploading the job offers. To find the hiring manager’s name, look into the job description to see if the recruiter left their name or go to the company’s LinkedIn page. For corporate cover letters, it’s safer to use the addressee's last name. Use the first name if you’re applying to a relaxed, casual company. Pro Tip: Wondering whether you should use the hiring manager’s first or last name? That depends on the company culture. Then follow with your reader’s details like this: Once you’re done with the header, mention the location and date of writing. It’s impolite to your current and potential employer. Pro Tip: If you send your cover letter via email, don’t use your current work email address. If you prefer to make one from scratch, though, include the following contact information: So use the same template and don’t worry about the design. Ideally, your cover letter header should be the same as in your resume for consistency. Let’s now move on to detailed instructions on how to write a successful cover letter: We’ve got a checklist guide for you: What to Include in a Cover Letter Worried you might miss something? You have levees built to a height of 1 all around the channel now, and the dam with a height of 0.5 at the end of it, and when the dry season starts the water level will drop to the 0.5 height of the dam. Again, hard to show this in a 2d diagram, but I hope this makes sense. You could replace the levee at the end with a dam (on top of a levee), giving it an outlet to direct the flow down the channel and excess water off the edge of the map to prevent flooding. Now, when water is flowing, the water level will rise all the way up to the levees, and because the height of all of the levees containing it is the same, it will slosh around as it overflows and spill out around the edges again. The lack of 3d space in this text post restrains this model a bit, but now we have the map's ground level height at 0, the channel with a depth of -1, and levees built up to height of 1 all around the first half of the channel. So now let's raise the water level by adding some more levees around the channel: XXXX If you replace the dam with a levee, which have a height of 1, the water will continue building up during the wet season and fill all the way up the edges of the channel and will overflow. So the 2 tiles after the dam will be empty and you retain 0.5 height water in the first 3 tiles. Now, with the dam there, when the drought starts and the flow stops, the water level will drop down to the level of the dam So water flows from the source at 1 tile of height, will reach the dam, the flow stops there until it's filled up enough to go over the top of the dam, and then will continue flowing over the dam and off the edge of the map. So here water will just flow through the channel, all at the same level, off the edge of the map.ĭams block the flow of water but are half-tile in height. I'll try to explain with some makeshift diagrams here. (when there isn't an active drought) Water spawns from the source tiles continuously during wet seasons and will continue to fill the space it can occupy until it can flow off of the edge of the map. When you block the flow of water it will build up until it has somewhere to flow. In other locations I simply want to create higher rivers and lakes for irrigation. What I would like to do is to build an artificial lake at a higher elevation and then create a channel that exits out into another lake which would create water flow and allow me to build a water wheel farm for power. Maybe I'm wrong, but based on the building outlines when placing this it looks like this type of pump can pump water (up to 6 tiles deep) and then discharge it. I've just researched and am close to completing a mechanical water pump and I feel like this may be the mechanic that I'm looking for. I would think that a water pump would do the trick, but it seems that the basic water pump simply pumps water to a certain quantity and then waits for a beaver to come and empty it into a water storage. I'm aware that adding a levee can increase water height, but at quite a distance from the source I'm not seeing much height increase. I'm playing on the lakes map and experimental build. Got maybe 15 or so hours into the game so far and I'm still learning how all the mechanics work. Sign Up: Stay on top of the latest breaking film and TV news! Sign up for our Email Newsletters here. While not a dedicated winter boot, the Nucleos performed on snow, and for early-spring hikes, through slush and moderately icy conditions. The boots saw snow, streams, hard-packed trail, and loose rock. Our editors tested these boots between February and May. Dubbed the “Impact Brake System,” it’s designed to provide extra cushion on heel strike and prevent slipping by digging in on steep terrain. One innovation: To add traction, La Sportiva used a scalloped hard rubber compound on the heel. The heel is not overbearingly high, and the build is lighter than average. A comfortable EVA foam midsole sits atop the Vibram tread. It’s a build that accommodates weekend backpackers, peak-baggers, and even thru-hikers who need something more rugged than trail-running shoes. La Sportiva notes the Nucleo is “perfect for hikers who want a medium-duty boot” and backpackers looking for a waterproof option that “breathes well and supports moderate loads.” In short: They are solid all-around hikers for almost all conditions with an adaptable outsole and a new kind of Gore-Tex technology that keeps water out (but also traps heat, making the boots warm on summer days). We wore the boots through winter and spring, through wet and dry conditions, and into summer now as the temps spike high. With an impact-absorbing heel, grippy sole, and a Gore-Tex Surround membrane, the Nucleos are capable and durable. We reviewed the boots - full name: La Sportiva Nucleo High GTX Hiking Boots - over several months. La Sportiva designed its Nucleo as a do-all hiker, balancing fit, light(ish) weight, and a bespoke Vibram outsole built for steep terrain or fast trail. Sometimes all you need is a solid, reliable boot. Aggressive tech in an unassuming package, La Sportiva Nucleo boots are waterproof and stocked with upgrades for mountains and trails. The most noticeable new feature is one of two things really. Die hard Pro Evolution Soccer fans of course will still not in anyway be convinced that this is the FIFA to finally take the crown of all football games, but it is a marked improvement over the shambles of the first Xbox 360 FIFA game, at least though we now get our heads out of the sand and boast again that we are indeed FIFA football fans. The whole game feels far more polished as you control your player. This has been addressed to great effect in the World Cup Germany 2006 version, which now plays far more like FIFA 06 on Xbox 1 and this is no bad thing at all! As a fan of the FIFA series, I was disenchanted that this next generation game felt empty of any soul. Everything I loved about FIFA 06 on Xbox 1 seemed to have disappeared and now a very awkward playing style was used. Although having played the first Xbox 360 incarnation of FIFA and was incredibly disappointed with the gameplay, I at least hoped we would see everything that was missing.įor those who happily avoided FIFA Road to the World Cup, it was quite a nice looking game, not quite next generation, but it was a lot better when you were zoomed in to the players. I remember thinking, why oh why already another version of FIFA so soon after the last one and even worse based on the same theme of the World Cup. I am a little more laid back in my approach to the series however I think we have something to smile about with this latest edition. So as you can tell I am a FIFA fan, I have stared at the opposition with interest (Pro Evolution Soccer) and wondered whether there is greener grass on the other side of the pitch.įIFA has become a love / hate relationship for most people, loving the presentation and hating the gameplay. Scarily I have played pretty much all of them from the very first SEGA Megadrive version and reviewed everyone since the FIFA 99 version. When I knew I was reviewing this game, I pondered on how many FIFA Football games I had played and reviewed. |
